There are three ways of working:
đ« Working in chaos.
đ Getting shit done.
đ Getting the results you need to hit your goals faster, better, cheaper.
When you work in chaos or you just try to get shit done, itâs easy to think:
start work -> to get results -> so I can meet my goals.
But this is backwards.
If you just start working, youâll get results, sure. But your results wonât align with your goals. Youâll run into unanticipated problems. Worst of all, you wonât have a sense of direction making you susceptible to distraction and leading to unfocused effort.
In other words, youâll work hard all day and get nothing done.
If you do meet your goals, it will be by chance, wonât be at the quality level you originally envisioned, and youâll have to ask, ânow what?â
Know this though.
If you fall in either of these two camps, itâs not your fault. Organization, planning, and productivity arenât classes youâll find in high-school. Colleges donât even teach this.
It takes a lot of self-study, months of practice, or learning from someone who already knows how to do it.
Once youâve learned, youâll never be able to âunseeâ the method. Youâll forever fall in camp three.
In camp three, you think:
List major goals -> in a dashboard -> so I can create milestones -> which turn into tasks -> that get scheduled -> so I can work -> measure the results -> and celebrate when Iâm done.
Do you see the difference?
Putting your major goals in a project dashboard gets it out of your head.
Turning each project into milestones helps you think through what needs to be achieved (and by when) to hit your goal.
Milestones turn into actionable tasks; actions to finish to call your milestone complete.
Tasks get scheduled. You make time to work on them.
NOW you know what to work on. NOW you have it scheduled so you arenât distracted. NOW you see how to move from here to success. NOW (not before) is when you get to work.
Once youâre working, you must measure your results. âWhat gets measured gets done.â
Finally, donât finish and start working on the next milestone. Take time to celebrate! Small victories need to be rewarded.
Rinse and repeat.
